It's getting dark at 5pm and I hate it. This time of year feels like being stuck underground. Everything slows down, motivation disappears, and getting out of bed takes more effort than it should.

When I feel like this, I don't want to do a whole thing. I want something simple that actually helps.

Lately that's been my crystal singing bowl.

More Than Just Sound

I keep a quartz crystal singing bowl tuned to 432 Hz on my dresser. It's tuned to C, which the marketing said corresponds to the heart chakra. Chakras are just one system among several, so take that for what it's worth. The 432 Hz part is what I find meaningful. There's something about that tuning that feels different from a traditional metal bowl. Richer, more resonant.

The process is simple, almost a ritual in how brief it is. I stand in front of the bowl, take one deep breath to center, then gently circle the rim with the mallet.

The sound that rises isn't just heard. It's felt. A pure tone that builds and fills the room, and fills your body too. You can feel it in your head, your chest cavity. It's like a cat sitting on you and purring, times a thousand. It's a quick way to shift something when sitting in the sun isn't an option.

Something to Try

If you want to try something like this, I'd actually recommend a tuning fork over a singing bowl. They're way cheaper, portable, and you can choose the frequency you want. I have a 528 Hz one that I keep in my bag. You just strike it and hold it near your ear, or press the base against your chest. Same idea, smaller package.

These small practices help get through the darker months. They don't fix everything, but they're something you can do for yourself when the weather won't cooperate.

If the seasonal shift is hitting you hard, a session might help. Sometimes you need more than a tuning fork.
