"Trauma-informed" shows up everywhere now. Therapist websites, yoga studios, Reiki practitioners. It's become a buzzword, which means it often doesn't mean much.
Here's what it actually means to me.
I See You as Good
That's the core of it. Pete Walker wrote about this in his book on complex trauma. The most healing thing isn't a technique or a protocol. It's unconditional positive regard. Being seen by someone who accepts you completely, even when you don't accept yourself.
A lot of people who've experienced trauma carry a deep sense that something is wrong with them. That they're too much, or not enough, or broken in some fundamental way. They've been told this directly or they've absorbed it over time.
Trauma-informed care, the way I practice it, means I don't see you that way. I see you as whole. I see you as worthy of care. Not because you've done the work or earned it or proved something. Just because you exist.
What That Looks Like
It's not complicated. I'm not walking on eggshells or treating you like you might shatter. That would be its own kind of insult.
It means when you show up however you show up, that's fine. Anxious, shut down, teary, numb, chatty, silent. All of it is welcome here.
I'm not evaluating you. I'm not tracking your progress. I'm not waiting for you to get better so I can feel like I helped.
You're already good. You don't have to perform wellness for me.
Why It Matters
Most of us don't get a lot of spaces where we're accepted without conditions. Where we don't have to manage how we're coming across or worry about being too much. Where someone isn't trying to fix us.
That's part of why I offer wellness consultations alongside Reiki. It's essentially an hour where someone is fully in your corner. You talk, I listen. You don't have to ask how my day was or worry about taking up too much space. It's support without the reciprocity that friendships require.
That kind of acceptance is rare. And it's healing in a way that's hard to explain until you've felt it.
I can't fix your trauma. I'm not trying to, but I can offer you an hour where you don't have to hold it all together. Where you're seen as good, even if you don't feel good. Sometimes that's enough to let something shift.
The Rest of It
Yes, I tell you what's happening in the session. Yes, you can stop whenever you want. Yes, I don't touch during Reiki. Those things matter, but they're not the point. The point is that you're welcome here.
If you've been looking for a space where you don't have to perform being okay, this might be it.
